The Medical Laboratory Technologist I is responsible for performing high complexity laboratory testing on patient specimens, performing quality control and quality assurance procedures, and complying with all applicable regulatory laboratory requirements. The high complexity nature of the work requires excellent attention to detail, effective written and verbal communication skills, the ability to complete tasks as directed and be flexible with tasks and schedules, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
The place of work is the Lab in Trier, Germany.
Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses according to the laboratory’s standard operating procedures.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Prepare reagents required for laboratory testing.
  • Perform, review and document laboratory quality control procedures.
  • Identify and report in a timely manner, basic problems that adversely affect test performance, e.g., controls out of range or failures.
  • Perform analytical result review.
  • Assist in training new laboratory personnel on current procedures, as assigned.
  • May participate in testing, qualification, or validation of new laboratory equipment, materials, processes, or systems.
  • Maintains data protection and follows patient information privacy regulations.
  • Provide support in maintaining adequate inventory of laboratory supplies for daily operations.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, management and non-laboratory personnel as needed.
  • Ability to address issues with non-laboratory personnel with assistance from senior staff and supervisors.
  • Assist in reviewing and editing standard operating procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of laboratory inspections as directed.
  • Maintain stringent standards for quality, report any issues which might adversely impact the quality of test results and/or employee safety to the appropriate management representatives as necessary for resolution.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance activities as directed.

  • Ability to work at night or on weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
Physical requirements
  • Standing or sitting for long periods of time and some lifting may be necessary.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment, including pipettes and micro-pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • Use of various chemicals to perform duties.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 20% of a typical working day.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
  • Willingness to travel approx. once a year to the US for training, if required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Medical Technical Assistant (MTA), Medical Technical Laboratory Assistant (MTLA), Biological Technical Assistant (BTA) or Chemical Technical Assistant (CTA) or Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Health Science, or related fields with 6 months of relevant hands-on laboratory experience.
  • Basic computer skills to include internet navigation and email usage.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office programs, such as: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Ability to speak and write in English language.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic Laboratory molecular pathology experience.
  • Ability to speak and write in German language or willingness to learn/improve in the first year to B1 level.
  • Possession of working knowledge of laboratory accreditation regulations.
  • Basic laboratory automation skills.
  • High volume laboratory experience.
  • Previous experience working with LIMS.
