Travel: Mandatory
Schedule: 8 days on/6 days off; 10-hour days up to 12-hour days; with the possibility of more days on and less days off
General Description:
Assist in the installation, repair and maintenance of various railroad signals and grade crossing warning devices. This position may include, but are not limited to installing, and dismantling of signal structures and components such as foundations, equipment housing, cable and switches; digs, fills holes and trenches; climbs poles and ladders; operates non-power hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, files, wrenches, pliers, shovels, picks, cutters and sledgehammers; operates manual machinery and heavy equipment; and unreels and installs wires and cables overhead and underground.
Physical Duties:
Physical duties require the ability to do the following: make quick and accurate movements; maintain exact and steady arm/hand positioning movements; perform a rapid, horizontal hand torque action; lift/carry and push/pull objects weighing 25 lbs. (frequently), 50 lbs. (occasionally) and 75 lbs. (infrequently); climb poles, ladders and large structures and maintain balance while working on equipment (frequently); dig holes and trenches; set poles; lift and maneuver heavy objects overhead (infrequently); walk for varied distances on uneven terrain (typically 3-5 miles per week); maintain muscular exertion over time ; perform occasional overhead work for short periods of time; perform occasional bending, stooping and kneeling; and stand for IO hours a day.
Accountabilities:
  • Assist in the installation; and repair of various railroad signals. This includes performing tasks associated with maintaining and dismantling signal structures and components such as foundations, equipment housing, cable and switches.
  • Clean and maintain work areas.
  • Dig holes and trenches with shovel and/or pick.
  • Work with information in print or on a computer.
  • Maintain, repair, and replace signal communication circuitry, systems and components.
  • Work with machines, tools, vehicles and equipment.
  • Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures. Must be able and willing to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks, and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations.
  • Unreel and install wires and cables overhead and underground.
  • Perform any other work not mentioned above that is required to construct or rehabilitate railroad signals.
Work Conditions:
  • Outside and exposed to all weather conditions.
  • Outside work is required regardless of weather conditions.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires.
  • In many rural remote geographic areas.
  • On the road or traveling, as required.
  • Occasionally at heights of 20 feet or more above the ground.
  • Away from home for several days at a time, with travel constituting in 95-100% of the position.
