The capacity group Conservation and Restoration of the department of Arts and Culture is looking for a lecturer to teach in the Masters and Advanced Professional Programme (APP) of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, specifically in the track Historical Interiors. You have been educated as a conservator at an academic level, preferably in historic interiors but conservators trained in another conservation specialisation who subsequently developed towards conservator of historic interiors are also considered. Experience as a conservator in the field of historic interiors is a must. Furthermore, your CV demonstrates your interest in and capacities for teaching within this specialisation on an academic level. The reason for a temporary contract of one year is replacement of a staff member pending organizational developments (new curriculum and new personnel plan in the coming year).

What are you going to do?

Together with the other lecturer(s) within the specialisation of Historical Interiors, you carry responsibility for the MA and APP education of conservators in this track, guiding them in the development of academic and practical knowledge and skills with inspiring lectures and workshops, developed according to the latest insights. You will also teach an introduction to the conservation of Historical Interiors in the BA minor programme. You will supervise furthermore student conservation treatments, internships, and mentor and advise students during their 4 years of study. Your teaching duties also include contributing to the renewal and improvement of the curriculum. You will also contribute to programme-wide courses on general topics, according to your background (e.g. in science modules, in historical source research modules or ethics and theory modules).

In your teaching, you have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers and lecturers in our team that covers ten different specialisations.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • co-developing, coordinating, and teaching courses in object-based, hands-on classes within the MA and APP programme in Historical Interiors, in collaboration with the staff of the capacity group of conservation and restoration, in particular, those within the track Historical Interiors;
  • supervising and mentoring student research (including Master and APP theses), internships and hands-on conservation projects;
  • contributing to the improvement of education and identifying opportunities for improvement;
  • making contributions to the development and implementation of improvements in didactics and/or content of the designated curriculum;
  • staying up to date with the professional literature and integrating new research insights in teaching the designated curriculum;
  • performing management duties;
  • participating in committees and working groups and performing administrative duties.

What do you have to offer?

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic lecturer in Historical Interiors conservation, someone who enjoys guiding the students in their development towards the conservation profession, and someone who likes to take on responsibilities for the quality of our education programme in close collaboration with the rest of the team.

Your experience and profile
  • a Master degree in conservation;
  • Advanced experience and skills in historic interior conservation;
  • preferably, experience with teaching in Master programmes at an academic level, specifically in the field of Historical Interiors;
  • a PhD in a relevant area is a plus, but is not a requirement for this position;
  • experience with digital and audiovisual equipment;
  • affinity with IT in academic education;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the Capacity group C&R;
  • willing and able to cooperate in multidisciplinary projects;
  • good administrative experience and skills;

What can we offer you?

We offer a temporary employment contract for a period of 1 year with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 30,4 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 September 2023.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges between € 3.974 to € 5.439. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
